Thanksgiving is a time to enjoy family, friends and our favorite holiday foods. This year, many people will take to the roads to celebrate the long holiday weekend. Unfortunately, the National Safety Council estimates that 417 people may die on U.S. roads this Thanksgiving holiday period. In addition, Thanksgiving, like many holidays, is a time when many gatherings involve alcohol consumption, which is a major contributing factor to motor vehicle crashes. Nationwide, alcohol-impaired fatalities (involving blood-alcohol content of 0.08 g/dL or higher) in 2017 represented 29% of the total traffic fatalities. During the Thanksgiving Day period, 35% of fatalities involved an alcohol-impaired driver. See National Safety Council Injury Facts.
